Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Etonogestrel is a progestin usually used along with ethinyl estradiol in combined hormonal contraception for women. The most well-known products containing etonogestrel are the NuvaRing vaginal ring and the Nexplanon subdermal implant.
Like other combined hormonal contraceptives, etonogestrel inhibits pregnancy in several ways:
Most women buy etonogestrel products for convenience; they are as effective as birth control pills but don't require daily administration. Like other combined hormonal contraceptives, they also provide other benefits:
Also similar to other combined hormonal contraceptives, treatment may be stopped at any time and fertility will be restored.
Etonogestrel Implants
Subdermal implants provide maintenance-free birth control for 3 years. The implant is inserted in the upper arm with a special syringe, after a local anesthetic has been administered. Once in place, the implant slowly releases medication for the next 3 years, after which time the implant should be removed, or replaced if continued birth control is desired. Implants can be removed earlier as well, and effects will be reversed within a month, similar to ending treatment with birth control pills.
A downside that makes some women hesitant to buy etonogestrel implants is that the medication may interfere with other drugs, and since implants must be administered and removed by trained personnel in a doctor's office, this can be inconvenient.
Vaginal Rings
Vaginal rings are almost as low-maintenance as implants. They are administered at home once a month into the vagina; exact positioning is not important as long as there is no discomfort. Regular activities may commence as normal, including intercourse, tampon use, swimming, and so forth. After three weeks the ring is removed; menstruation typically begins a few days later. After one week a new ring is inserted.
Like implants, etonogestrel rings may interact with other medications. It is, however, considerably easier to stop and restart treatment with vaginal rings.
Considerations & Side Effects
Women planning to buy etonogestrel birth control products should be aware that:
The vast majority of women use etonogestrel products without any issues. Most side effects are very mild, and stop occurring after a week or two of treatment:
If the above side effects are severe, or any other unusual symptoms are noticed, seek the advice of a doctor.
